Interpretation of New Year’s and Festival Food Customs in Hankou Zhuzhi Ci

SHENG-HONG ZHOU, YU-CHENG XIA

Abstract

Many chapters in Ye Titian's book Hankou Zhuzhi Ci present the diet and customs of Hank, a major commercial town in the first half of the 19th century. They preserve abundant historical materials for future generations to study diet culture from the perspectives of literature, sociology, folklore and linguistics. Among them, the presentation of the original taste of Hank's New Year's diet customs, such as the first month, Shan't Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival and Baba Festival, provides a valuable historical mirror for the development of contemporary diet culture and industry.
