Development and Key Technology of the TBM Cutter Head Drive System

Abstract

Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) is an advanced modern tunnel construction equipment. As the most important core component of TBM, the cutter-head drive system and its performance directly affect the efficiency and quality of the dug rocks. This paper elaborates the principle, driving schemes and the developments of the cutter-head drive system of TBM. The problems encountered in the construction and the methods to solve these problems are presented in the paper. Finally, the key technologies and the trend to develop the cutter-head drive system are discussed.
