Flywheel Energy Storage System for Power Quality Improvement Application: A Review

Abstract


Flywheel energy storage system (FESS) plays an important role in improving the power quality for the power system with high-penetration renewable energy sources, due to its advantages of high power density, quick response time, long cycle life and high energy efficiency. This paper presents a review of FESS for power quality improvement application. The main components are introduced and the literatures about the development of FESS are also discussed. Moreover, the FESS based technology for frequency regulation and voltage support is discussed, and some recent research works and the related waveforms are reviewed to confirm the effectiveness and performance.
