Abstract

As important high-voltage equipments, metal oxide surge arresters are extensively applied in China’s power system. The aim of this paper was to propose effective detection solution to detecting the faults in time and evaluating the operating status of arresters. According to reported cases of arrester faults, this paper analyzed the common types and causes of arrester faults. Based on a practical case, conventional detection methods used in live detection of arresters are also discussed. Furthermore, the paper established a model of arrester with the software CST, and simulated the propagation characteristics of the electromagnetic waves excited by partial discharge. The paper proposed that the combination of conventional live detection methods and ultra high frequency technology contributes to detect the arrester fault and evaluate the insulating state more effectively.
