The Fusion of The Banquet Bug into English Culture
Abstract
Yan Geling, a Chinese writer successfully published her first English novel The Banquet Bug in America. In the process of this publication, she endeavors to make fusion into western culture. Beginning from choosing the topic, figure analysis, to designing covers in the context of subtext, this paper attempts to analyze these underlying factor resulting in the fusion. It can be concluded that Yan together with her western publishers appeal to the western readers’ expectation for the convenience of publishing by exaggerating or adding the Chinese elements into the book, which have little to do with the content itself. On the way of introducing the Chinese literature, it should be taken into account that what would attract western readers and relate to their pre-understanding and expectation. Understanding those may to some extent help to pave the way for Chinese literature going out.
