On the Translation Work of Foreign Newspapers Accomplished by Gezhi Xinpao

Abstract

Gezhi Xinpao, also known as Scientific Review, is a comprehensive journal specialized in translating and disseminating western science and technology in late Qing dynasty, and is also a scientific translation journal which mainly carries scientific information translated from a foreign source. Through a close examination of the original literature, this paper undertakes to make preliminary discussion on the translation work completed by Scientific Review from the nature of the journal, source of scientific translation, content of scientific translation and significance of scientific translation, hence contributing greatly to science education in China.
