Modern Chinese Civilization in Shanghai Cityscape

JUN-XUAN WANG

Abstract

In comparison with other major cities in the world, Shanghai’s spatial structure can be described as a unique hallowed concentric circle, as an interactive result of Shanghai’s history, its economic development model, its government administration and land ownership style. This perspective also explains the urban decay, gentrification and over planning undergoing currently in Shanghai, and points out a future profile for Shanghai and even a glimpse into the modern Chinese civilization as a whole.
