SES and Death Rate: Mechanisms and Empirical Evidence
Abstract
This article focuses on one specific health-related outcome—mortality, describing the detailed patterns of health disparities by socioeconomic factors such as income and education. The authors also comment on the mechanisms underlying the observed mortality disparities. Later they examine the strengths and weaknesses of the empirical literature associated with each proposed mechanism, pointing directions for future research related to understanding the mortality disparities.
